Vasco da Gama (1469-1524): The sea route to India!
At the end of the 14th century all known sea and land routes were more dangerous than ever. Letters of marque (
) issued by seapowers like France, England, Portugal and Spain made it extremely difficult for ordinary merchant ships to reach their homeports with their goods. The only resort seemed to be a new sea route along the African coast eastwards to India.
- July 8th 1497: Starting from the port of Restelo in Lisbon four ships under the command of their commander Vasco da Gama on his flagship "S. Gabriel" set sail for their long voyage.
- November 4th 1497: The fleet reaches the bay of St. Helena on the West African coast.
- April 7th 1498: After passing the Cape of Good Hope Vasco da Gama reaches Mombasa.
- 20th 1498: Vasco da Gama lands in Calcutta on the Indian Malabar coast.
The sea route to India was found and Vasco Da Gama's name went down in history.
