Vasco da Gama (1469-1524): The sea route to India!

At the end of the 14th century all known sea and land routes were more dangerous than ever. Letters of marque (wikipedia.gif) issued by seapowers like France, England, Portugal and Spain made it extremely difficult for ordinary merchant ships to reach their homeports with their goods. The only resort seemed to be a new sea route along the African coast eastwards to India.

  • July 8th 1497: Starting from the port of Restelo in Lisbon four ships under the command of their commander Vasco da Gama on his flagship "S. Gabriel" set sail for their long voyage.
  • November 4th 1497: The fleet reaches the bay of St. Helena on the West African coast.
  • April 7th 1498: After passing the Cape of Good Hope Vasco da Gama reaches Mombasa.
  • 20th 1498: Vasco da Gama lands in Calcutta on the Indian Malabar coast.

The sea route to India was found and Vasco Da Gama's name went down in history.
