It’s Valentine’s Day again, a day to bring a sly grin to even the oldest seadog’s toothless face. It seems like it was only a few weeks ago since we last shanghaied a “fair maiden” from Tortuga and set sail into the horizon to the melodic tune of her family’s angry protests. Needless to say, she made for a fine first officer and occasionally shared this jolly captain’s hammock until we parted ways in Madeira.

So let’s do it again. To celebrate this international day of love without having to go through the hassle of having to set Edward Teach’s beard on fire for merely suggesting, nay, hinting at romantic letter-writing, and the plundering of chocolate hearts and sickening teddybears, here’s how to go about it.

1. Find some grog.

5. Repeat 1 through 4 for as long as these instructions still make sense or you start seeing cherubs. Please note that steps 1 through 5 aren’t really necessary, but it’s a jolly good way to start any sea journey.
